During summer we spend most of our days outside, hanging out with people or just chilling by ourselves. This is also the time of summer parties and any way you look at it, patio is the perfect place for such events. To make the experience even more comfortable and enjoyable, we can upgrade our patio in many simple ways. When thinking about what you could do to improve the look of your patio, you should choose something that will look nice, be functional and safe, and preferably affordable and low-maintenance. Here are a few of our favourite ideas.

Plants

Although this one is rather obvious, getting plants for your patio should always be your number one task. If you don’t have space to make patio planter pockets, then the easiest way to bring plants in is in container gardens. These can range from small plants to real young trees, like lemon or orange tree, growing in a big flower pot. The best thing about them is that you can keep them indoors all year round and simply take them out to the patio when the weather is warm enough.

Floor cushions

Since you will spend a lot of time on your deck, you want it to be comfy and accommodate many people. In addition to getting soft cushions for your outdoors furniture, you can go a step further and get some floor cushions or even big floor cushion couches, in the Oriental style. Kids will love it and it is a perfect way to relax and chill out outside. Alternatively, you can get a thick rug and put some standard cushions on it, or get a few lazy bags.
Cusions

Hammocks

There probably isn’t a single person who dislikes hammocks. There is just something so inviting and special about them. You don’t need to go to a tropical beach in Thailand to enjoy all the pleasures of a hammock, you can set them up on your patio. There are many versions to choose from – from standard hammock, chair hammock for one person, to hanging chairs. There are even hanging tents if you plan on sleeping outside.

Wreaths

Decorative wreaths are a great way to improve the esthetics of your deck. You can make them out of many different kinds of materials, but those made from flowers and branches will look most natural and fit into the outdoors setting perfectly. Luckily, flowers are abundant in summer, so you can use roses or flowers from shrubs like Dogwood, Hydrangeas, Lilacs, Ninebarks and Spireas. DIY wreaths can also be made from old clothes and rags woven into a nice decorative circle, from burlap, old bandanas and cardboard. They can be colored, wrapped in yarn and decorated with small toys and things like cocktail umbrellas.

Stones

Arranging stones in decorative patterns on the ground can really create a beautiful setting. You can make various combinations and floor paintings with stones in different colours and sizes. If you don’t mind putting in some extra effort, you can come up with mosaic pathways that will simply look magical.

Stones

All of these simple ideas will transform your patio deck into the coolest place to be this summer, and all you need to add is some music and soft lighting and you are all set for your summer party season. Use it well!

Candles can be used as a sensitive home décor items, and they acquire some care and maintenance if you want them to last longer. But, generally, we don’t bother much about candle decor.  Instead, we usually neglect them, and replace them when it’s needed. This should not be the way to treat your candles. They can help you bring a Zen bliss into your home, so you need to consider them as an important part of home decoration. Here are given few tips worth following if you want to add some life to your decorative candles.

Wick Trimming

At some point debris will collect at the top of the wick. This will cause poor and flickering flame, and in some cases even a bad smell.  To prevent this, trim the top of the wick up to 6 millimeters. That will give you a nice and odour free flame.

Avoid Draught

Scientifically, candle flames appear because of the presence of air. If there is not enough air, the flame will either become uneven or it will convert into smoke.  To avoid such problems, consider to find a location with a proper air flow or ventilation. Candles, when lit correctly, will provide lovely ambiance for your home. Also, avoid placing them in the corners because the air flow there is often inappropriate for burning of the wick.

A candle melting

Consider Temperature & Light

You all know the fact that wax (from which candle was made of) is sensitive to temperature and heat of light. With the increase of temperature or increase of light, the candle starts to melt, causing a bad structure. So, try to keep your candles in a slightly cold and calm place. Select a spot where you think the temperature is low enough so it will not affect the candles. Storing your candles at such places will not only protect them from melting, but will also save the color and fragrance of your candles for a long time.

Candle decor

Use Tapers

A whiff of fresh air diverts the flame and makes it appear wobbly and unstable. To make your candlelight in a vertical position only, use candle tapers. The tappers not only prevent the flames from getting moved by air, but will also help to protect the surrounding from catching on fire. You can buy dusk candle cradles or similar candle holders to support the tappers without compromising the overall beauty and charm.

Use Candle Snuffer

Most often, candles are placed higher from the ground, so they can provide better lightning. When this is the case it’s not so easy to light them or to put them out. This is where you can use candle snuffer to ease this task, to reach those high places and it’s even good to use them to avoid smoke or wax splatter. Different types of decorative snuffers are available online, so you can check out the offer before you decide what to buy for your re-birthed home.

So, it’s time to go out and search for the candle that will suit your home style. Maybe you like your decor to be inspired by shabby chic trends.  Mix and match and always keep in mind all of the given advice about candle decor.

Enjoy Lightning Your Home!

The clutter is a menace that does not just get in our way, for its negative effects spill over in our mind as well. Once it piles up, it impedes our ability to concentrate and think clearly. Luckily, we are not short on ways of summoning tidiness out of this pitfall, and equipping ourselves with creative ideas and low-cost tools. So, take advantage of smart organization hacks in order to transform your abode into the sanctuary of order. Make every inch of space count, and do away with hoarding habits.

Fit it together

The magnitude of the problem may seem intimidating at first, but let us go step by step, and use the good old divide and conquer tactics. Apart from the willingness to face the mess and chaos, you also need a strategy to defeat them. You should be able to utilize various household items for the task, or create some DIY storage. Think outside the box: Place things not where they are expected to be, but where they fit.

So, why not put some kitchen supplies in a magazine holder, stack hair products in wine rack, and pile up vintage suitcases to form a DIY side table. Also, remember that there is no need to purchase expensive organizers when kitchenware, cookie jars, and bags can be employed as efficient home organisation tools. Versatile furniture is a true blessing, especially if you get your creative juices flowing.

For example, I have seen some amazing work spaces assembled by cobbling together IKEA shelves and installing a tabletop on top of them. Just find a matching chair, and you got yourself a nice table with plenty of storage space. Moreover, one should make an effort to maximize hidden storage. The visible one, when jam-packed with frippery, can still induce a sense of frustration. An awesome trick for maximizing your space is also playing with lighting. It will definitely make your space management more effective and give the spotlight to your shelves.

Gain the breathing space

Walls are potent instruments for combating clutter, and it is high time to mount some cool storage solutions on them. Hang the metallic equipment such as bobby pins on the magnetic strip, which you can hide on the backing of the medicine cabinet. If you have some spare PVC pipes, turn them into wall holders for hair dryers and other beauty tools. At last, keep the shopping bags and hang them in order to store items you need on a daily basis.

Furthermore, the entangling wire disarray is a nuisance which clutters the area which we require for work or entertainment. Fortunately, you may use labelled bred tags to mark the cables for different devices, and tell them apart in an instant. A cord organizer can also come in the form of toilet roll: Feel free to decorate it with a washi tape and be stylish about organizing.

Finally, bear in mind that it is often those little knick-knacks that put us at our wit’s end. Well, rise up to the challenge with a DIY approach, and create Jewellery Stand: Cut the bottoms of plastic bottles and thread them together. Another option is to find an unutilized frame and put some wire mesh, fabric or burlap in it. This frame organizer will also serve as a unique piece of wall art, adding life to dull surfaces. Little by little, your home undergoes a positive transformation, and with it your domestic life.

Falling into formation

It may seem like a mountain to climb, but with smart organization hacks it is possible to get your living environment orderly in no time. Conceal your unsightliness and tone down on the clutter. The art of planning and marshalling your army of household objects is the best strategy to infuse your home with comfort, gain extra space and add some visual appeal. Your life will suddenly become easier, and the time it costs to get organized is nothing compared to accumulated stress and waste of space.

Feeling completely safe and secure in your home and out of it is something that starts becoming a priority as years go by. Especially when you do not have to think about yourself only but your family as well. Therefore, doing everything in your power to protect your home and loved ones is a must if you wish to have some peace of mind. One of the things you need to address is your emergency plan. Here are some pointers:

Make the outside of your home safe

If you live in a house like I do, you might want to secure your outdoor premises. Basically, first thing I did when I started feeling more aware of possible theft dangers is that I got a nice fence around my yard. It is not too high so it does not look like I am trying to hide something. But, it is still high enough that it would be fairly obvious if someone tried to jump over it. We got motion detecting lights outside and these always light up in the evening when someone walks around the yard. Even though our family dog Henry is getting old, the sign ‘Beware of the dog’ and his occasional barking are in my opinion great additions to the general home security.

Beware of the dog sign

Locks and alarm system

You must never neglect the protection of your house or flat itself, even if you think that there is no way for uninvited guests to step into your yard or building unnoticed. Combining the locks of my house with good security system was the best thing I ever did because it provided me and my family with good nights of sleep and made us completely relaxed when we are going out, thanks to different modes and settings such as Home Mode and Away Mode, that can be further customized and accessed from any device as long as you have Internet connection.

Safety codes and words

It is extremely important to be able to actually remember your alarm code easily, especially when in danger and hurry to quickly leave the home. Therefore, we as a family decided on the combination of our birth dates which involves one number from each member and therefore it is really easy for us to remember it but it would not be an obvious guess in any way to an outsider. Moreover, we came up with a safe word that we could give to the security center in case they need to check our identities fast as well as the unfortunate possibility when we would have to call each other for help. Simply texting a safe word is quicker and more efficient than trying to make a call.

Prepared for the worst

We had long talks as a family about worst case scenarios that could happen. It is of utmost importance to stay calm if you find your house burgled and leave immediately without touching anything to call the police. If you have kids, explain them that in this case they should run to the neighbors and talk to the neighbors about this as well so they would know what to do and who else to call beside the police. Also, thefts might not be the only lurking danger and I always keep the bag filled with necessities and emergency kit ready in the car in case of fire, with our most important personal documents safely stored away in a hard cover folder that can be taken with us in a second.

If you are a responsible adult you would not find it difficult to tend to all the necessary actions for home security. Also, remember to keep your home’s layout neat so that you would not trip in the dark when you have to leave quickly.

If you still fear you missed something and you are not sure how to behave in case of an emergency, I found this infographic by SimpliSafe to be quite useful.

With the hot shiny summer just around the corner our homes will be filled with light and warmth. In order to let your home shine bright and exude welcoming cheerful atmosphere you have to make sure it is properly decorated. And the walls are just the right place for making a difference. Do not let your wall stand bare and dull, fill it with various forms of art and bring back vividness into your home.

Washi Tape Art

Playing with washi tape is always fun and it makes one easy DIY project. Just get a few roles of your favorite colors and patterns of washi tape and do miracles on your walls. Choose the wall you want to bring back to life and make your own cute polka dots on it. You can also use this tape to write some quotes or inspirational words to keep you going each day, or just play with shapes and colors and create perfect decoration for the boring white wall.

Framed Scarf

Who says you can only frame art and photos? Just like any girl, you probably have lots of colorful scarves that you do not even wear. So why not give them purpose and turn them into art? Choose a scarf or two you desire, cut them in half and make a few smaller framed pieces for your hallway’s wall decoration. However, if you think you will regret cutting them, just fold them into the shapes and sizes you desire and put inside a frame. These colorful fabrics can easily change the atmosphere in your home and make a great contrast to pale empty walls.

Print the Art

Printed wall art is one of the easiest ways to decorate your home. Additionally, it offers you the opportunity to choose from a vast variety of patterns, images, shapes and colors. To add a touch of elegance and style into your living room you can have some wall art prints featuring modern or abstract art; for more relaxing atmosphere have images of your favorite beaches and relaxing places printed. The team at Smooth Decorator bumped into an amazing Australian firm (with affordable art, mind you) called Wall Art Prints. Here’s a sneak peek of their lovely beach art:

Clipboard Wall Art

Even the most ordinary and seemingly boring item in your home – a clipboard – can pose as an innovative piece of decoration. Take as many clipboards as you want and simply hang them on the wall. Take a few colorful pieces of papers and print out different letters on them. Attach the papers to the clipboards and have fun spelling out some inspirational words, or just let them be an interesting decoration above the desk.

Fabric Panels

Creating your own fabric panels is probably the fastest way of giving your home a makeover. Find some patterned fabrics that you like and cover empty canvas with them. Have different sizes and shapes of the canvases and look for colors that will only make your home more inviting. Let the floral patterns and geometrical shapes on soft fabrics make your every day filled with happiness and warmth.

Living Wall Art

Each home needs a touch of nature in order to be complete and fresh. It may seem impossible to decorate your walls with plants, but there actually is a solution – air plants. These refreshing little fellows are easy to fit anywhere and they just look cute. Take a few smaller wooden boards and put a few nails in it in various shapes. Use colorful strings to create a small network on the board and connect the nails, but make sure to leave enough space for the cute plants.

Whether you enjoy fantasy novels depicting magical beings or perhaps a scientific magazine, it is safe to say that a book worm lies in each and every one of us. And we all know that every book worm deserves a cozy reading nook where he can get lost in his own world. These are a few simple tips on how to assemble your own dreamy getaway space:

Eating ice cream and drinking coffee in a reading nook

Peace & Quiet

Reading is a process that requires concentration and focus, and like that it is quite logical that your reading nook should be in a calm surrounding. This will enable you to relax and unwind after a long day. It should exude with serenity, so the best solution is to choose a distant corner in your house and transform it in a tranquility nook. This does not necessarily have to be a huge space, only enough for you to feel comfortable. It could quite easily be a small closet space, an unused pantry or a transformed storage facility.

Reading a magazine in a reading nook

Warm & Cozy

After you have established an isolated space to create your nook the next step is making it as comfy a possible. There is no better feeling than diving into your seat, snuggling in and parting with the real world for some time. The best way to achieve this cozy ambient is by placing a big armchair or a mattress. Do whatever feels more comfortable and top it off with a set of small cushions and blankets. Another thing that can really contribute to the whole ambient is that you add scented candles or incense sticks that will surely put your mind at ease.

A reading nook with a table and indoor plants.

Illumination

Perhaps one of the most important things when it comes to creating a reading nook is considering the lighting in the space. The best possible option is, of course, enabling as much of natural sunlight into the room. This is why it would be a good idea to create a nook somewhere near a window. If that is not possible, then make sure to invest in some good illumination of the space. Your reading nook should not be dark and gloomy, as this could greatly damage you eyesight.

Storage & Organization

Lastly, make sure that all your reading material has its own place. While most of us would gladly create an oversized library, the best idea is to add shelving and some drawers. This way, your books wouldn’t be scattered around. It is also a good idea to make it functional in a way that everything is at the reach of your fingertips.

Many will agree that reading is one of the truest pleasures in life. A good book has an ability to take you to a completely new world. It can alter your mind, your vision of the world, help your grow and develop throughout life. With these simple tips, you will create a portal to another dimension in the comfort of your home.

So, you want to live on your own; you are too old to share the place with roommates or your parents any longer, but you haven’t decided where to live. Choosing a real estate property is one of the most important and difficult choices in everyone’s life. Everyone has a different lifestyle, habits, wishes… In accordance with our wishes, interests and abilities we are trying to create and organize our own lives in the best possible way. But, should you choose a house, apartment or condo? Check out the pros and cons.

Regardless of which of the three options above you chose, each of them has its pros and cons. To realize which option is the best for you, smart thing would be to compare them through several universal parameters.
Apartment

Maintenance

Condo: Living in a condo doesn’t involve a big commitment when it comes to keeping your living space well maintained. Keeping your condo clean and tidy is easy, fast and convenient. However, living in a condo involves dealing with other tenants when it comes to maintaining the mutual parts of the building (hallways, lights, heating  …).

Apartment: To maintain your apartment, you will need as much time and money as for maintaining the condo. But the big difference between condo and apartment is that you wouldn’t have to worry about the common parts of the building, if you chose the apartment, because there are none. The building is owned by one owner, who is leasing the apartments and taking care of its maintenance.

House: Home maintenance requires more time, especially when it comes to gardening; but many homeowners consider everyday chores as an excellent relief from everyday stress and other obligations.
House

Comfort

Condo and apartment: Your financial possibilities and individual choices are crucial for the level of comfort in the apartment or a condo. However, given that residential buildings are mainly located close to all necessary facilities, a gym, shop, park, market and other necessary facilities will be at your hand which is great comfort is to have. Bear in mind that if you chose the apartment or a condo, you will need to have consideration for other tenants and will have to reduce the noise and partying to a minimum.

House: The house is definitely the queen of comfort. Besides the fact that you can customize it and adjust it to your own requirements and preferences, you will be able to fully enjoy the privacy and peace. Also, you can enjoy the fresh air in your own backyard, save money if you make your house earth friendly and have any pet you want.
Condominium

Lifestyle

Condo: Condo is an ideal choice for those who lead an active life, regardless of whether it is a family or a single person. People who choose to live in the condo are usually those who spend a lot of time outside, working, traveling or enjoying the various events and outdoor activities.

Apartment: Ask yourself: ”How long am I going to stay in this city”? If you buy, you are attached to the location and it is important to know for how long you are planning to stay at one place. The real estate market is characterized by low flexibility lately and buying a real estate to own it for a few years is not a profitable investment. You should know that buying a property includes a number of other costs, taxes, real estate agency fees, etc. Overall, in the short term, that is less than 10 years (especially if your property is financed by loans), renting an apartment is always cheaper and smarter option.

House: The house is the ideal choice for people who like to spend time at home with maximum privacy. House gives a lot of freedom. Large spaces, privacy, nature, doing your favorite hobby in a workshop or a garage, uninterrupted playing or listening to music are just some of the privileges that homeowners have. If you’re thinking about starting a family, this is definitely the best option for you.
House, Apartment, Condo

With such important decisions, you need to realistically and objectively view the situation, evaluate your own capabilities, your lifestyle, needs and goals in life. If you think it through carefully, I’m sure you will make the right choice, if you are not sure – lease the apartment.

This is the year when we commemorate great anniversaries: 200 years since Charlotte Bronte’s birth and 400 years since William Shakespeare’s death. In light of those events, all over the world there will be seminars, workshops, celebrations, and book clubs which will serve the purpose of commemorating these great writers. For all of us who have that creative spark, here are writing rooms bound to inspire everyone.

A hidden, secret nook

Similarly to romantic secret passageways behind rich people’s bookshelves we see in movies, you can make your own secret writing and reading nook in your own home. For this, you will, of course, need an empty space in form of cupboard under the stairs (think Harry Potter). You can easily order ready-made bookshelf door which can be attached to the entrance of the space you are trying to hide and completely hide it. Inside you can bring plenty of soft blankets and plush cushions so you can stay for as long as you like. Just make sure you have enough natural light or at least a good lamp so that long hours spent over your book, notebook, or laptop do not damage your eyes.

Magic mezzanine

If you have high ceiling in your home, regardless of whether you live in an apartment or a house, you can use the space to make your own comfortable mezzanine writing room. Because you don’t have to close it off completely or hide it, there will be plenty of natural light so you can focus on preparing the space. Bring in a desk and a chair for your notebooks and laptop. Or if you are more into writing from an ‘unconventional’ position, bring in a mattress or an armchair and give it a go. Of course, no writer is ever calm without their books, so make sure all your favourite ones are placed on the shelves or simply arranged on the floor beside you.

Your own library

Is there a better way to get inspired than in the space filled with books? Stephen King said that books are uniquely portable magic, and you will need some magic if you are looking for inspiration to finish your writing. Pretty much every writer and bookworm is fantasizing about having their own library at some point in their lives, but until those dreams become true, you can do what you can to make your own small library. Libraries are so easy to make and so amazing that there is a hostel in Japan which offers you a chance to sleep in small nooks placed among bookshelves – every booklover’s dream!

It doesn’t matter whether you’re an aspiring writer or not, an enthusiast, or simply a devoted reader, everyone deserves a quiet corner for themselves, their books, notes, and thoughts. And you should look for inspiration in different photos of various book and writing nooks from all over the world. Something will catch your eye and inspire you to create your own space.

The smell and the sight of freshly cut neat grass is a paradise for any homeowner’s senses. It’s not an exaggeration. If you are a fan of minimal landscaping approach, then a simple lawn will do the trick. The fans of lavish landscaping, stop here, this is not a place for you. You reader, who is redoing your lawn for the first time, there are some, mind you, easy things you can do. In order for you to have a great overview of what is needed to keep your backyard and front yard grass under control, we compiled some elementary tips. Let’s start.

Following lawn care tips and mowing regularly

The colours of grass

First step to consider is, of course, the type of grass. Since you’ll be growing from scratch, you will need to consider pros and cons for every grass type. One of the things beginners need to know is to determine the region they live in and buy the grass they feel would fit nicely into their lawn. Some of the types of grass that “enjoy” cooler climate are: Bluegrass, Fine fescue, Perennial ryegrass, & Tall fescue. On the other side, there are those who fall into the category of “warmer” grasses. People in this region should opt for either one of these: Zoysia, Centipede, Bahia, Common Bermuda, & Hybrid Bermuda. Keep in mind the function of your lawn. If you plan on having family activities, then you need a more resistant type so that it doesn’t wear or tear to fast. Kentucky bluegrass, for example, is a great choice for “active” lawns. It is durable and it can self mend.

From soil sprout thee, I command!

This is a really important step, so think carefully how to approach it. Setting the soil is the key component for a successful grass growth. Don’t forget to test the soil. You can get a soil test kit from local experts (cheaper) or you can have them do the gathering of samples. It might take some time to get through this step, but it will save you a lot of money in the long run. You’ll know exactly what to spend on and how much. Next thing you need to take care of is weeds. You need to make a thorough inspection and banish every single trace of it. This process often includes stripping the land of the top surface, usually six inches (roughly 15 centimetres) will do the trick.  Then it’s time to fertilise the ground. Naturally, there isn’t one way to do this, so inform yourself of different composting techniques.

Preparing the perfect soil for your lawn

The best haircut

One thing you should never ever do is cut your grass the shortest you can. Why? It can stress out the grass and make it weaker. Basically, you’ll end up destroying all the effort you put into it. It’s way better to cut it often and a bit longer.

We are great believers in doing everything with your own two hands, so that you can feel the process. However, when it comes to maintenance tips, cut your losses (literally) and use a lawn mower. Why? Go through these advantages and find out:

  • Ease of use – You can have many benefits starting from accommodations to attachments, if you choose ride on lawn mowers. But one of the most important advantages is ease of use. Especially If you cannot strain your body to push things or stand for long. You can drive it like a car sitting comfortably while cutting the grass as per requirement. It is not just that these mowers reduce your physical strength, but these mowers also help you to cut the grasses in an even manner.
  • Easy to start – The ride on lawn mowers are started like a car. Therefore, you do not have to use your body strength to pull chord to start your lawn mowers.
