Okay, so I’ve been staring at my front door for like… three weeks now? Maybe four? And I still can’t decide what colour to paint it. It’s currently this sad, peeling beige-ish grey that the previous owners left behind, and every time I come home I’m like “yep, still hate it.”
The thing is, choosing a door colour feels way more significant than it probably should. Like, it’s just a door, right? But also it’s THE DOOR. The first thing people see. The thing that supposedly says something about who you are as a person. (Does it though? Does my door colour really define me? These are the questions that keep me up at night.)
So I’ve been doing what any reasonable person does – spending hours scrolling through Pinterest and driving around my neighborhood like a total creep, taking photos of other people’s doors. My camera roll is now 40% door pics. It’s fine. Everything’s fine.
The Safe Choice: Black
Everyone says you can’t go wrong with black. It’s classic! It’s sophisticated! It goes with everything! But here’s my thing – doesn’t everyone have a black door now? I swear every house flip show I watch, boom, black door. Part of me wants to be different just for the sake of being different. Is that petty? Maybe.
But also, black does look really good. Ugh.
The Fun Choice: Something Bold
I keep coming back to this gorgeous deep teal I saw on a house three streets over. That’s kerb appeal, baby. Or maybe a rich burgundy? There’s something about a colourful door that just makes me happy. Like, life’s short, why not have a door that sparks joy?
But then the practical voice in my head (which sounds suspiciously like my mother) says “What if you want to sell? What if you get tired of it? What if the HOA complains?” (We don’t even have an HOA, brain. Chill.)
The Wild Card: Natural Wood
Plot twist – what if I just strip all the paint off and stain it? I’ve seen some gorgeous natural wood doors lately and there’s something really warm and inviting about them. Plus, it would be different from literally everyone on my street.
The downside? That sounds like SO MUCH WORK. And I’m not entirely sure what kind of wood is even under all these layers of paint. Could be beautiful oak. Could be… not.
Things I’m Considering That Probably Don’t Matter But Feel Important:
- My house is yellow. Well, “butter cream” according to the paint can I found in the garage
- I have a lot of plants on my porch (too many? no such thing)
- My doormat says “probably at target” which feels relevant somehow?
- The door gets full afternoon sun (does this matter for paint? should I google this?)
- I really hate making decisions
Where I’m At Now
Honestly? I’ve narrowed it down to:
- Navy blue (safe but not boring?)
- That deep teal I’m obsessed with
- A really rich forest green
- Just leaving it for another month while I continue to overthink
I did buy paint samples. They’re sitting in my garage, judging me. I painted little squares on the door two weeks ago and now my door looks like it has a skin condition, which is somehow worse than the peeling beige.
Maybe I should just flip a coin? Ask my neighbor’s dog? Take a poll on Instagram?
Or maybe – and hear me out – the colour doesn’t actually matter that much and any choice would be better than the current situation of sad beige + paint sample patches.
Anyway, if you see someone standing in front of their house at various times of day, staring at paint patches on their door and muttering to themselves, that’s me. Say hi. Maybe bring opinions. Or coffee. Definitely coffee.
What colour is your door? Are you happy with it? Please tell me someone else has spent this much mental energy on what should be a simple decision.
Update: It’s been two hours since I started writing this and I just ordered pizza instead of making a decision. The delivery guy said “nice paint samples” so that’s where we’re at now.
